Admissions Process

King’s House School is an independent preparatory school and nursery in Richmond for children aged 3 to 13, serving families from across areas of Surrey and South West London including Twickenham, Chiswick and Barnes. As part of our transition to co-education, girls joined Reception and Year 1 in September 2024. In September 2025 they will also be able to join over half of our year groups across the school.

The main points of entry to the school are in the Nursery (2+), Reception (4+), Year 3 (7+), Year 4 (8+) and Year 7 (11+). Spaces do often become available in other year groups throughout the school: get in touch to find out about availability.

The admissions process varies by year group, and more information is given below. Further information can be found in our Admissions Policy.

The typical admissions process is:

All prospective families can contact the Registrar, Mrs Sally Bass, on or 020 8940 1878, or complete the enquiry form below to find out more about applying to King’s House School.

  • Visit Us

Families can book their place at an upcoming Open Morning by contacting admissions or completing the form here. You are also warmly invited to attend a private tour of the School with the Head, which you can book by contacting the Registrar. These open events provide an opportunity for you to meet pupils, staff and see the school in action.

  • Register Your Child

To proceed with an application, please complete the registration form and pay the £120 registration fee to register your child for King’s House School or Nursery.

  • Accept an Offer

If an offer of a place has been made, we then kindly ask families to complete the acceptance form and pay the relevant deposit to accept the place. The deposit is £2,000 for the Nursery, £3,500 for the Junior Department and £4,000 for the Senior Department.

Entry to the Nursery

King’s House Nursery is a private, term-time pre-school with two year groups. Children can join Hedgehogs Class in the term they turn 3 (rising 3s). They then move up to our pre-school classes (Squirrels or Rabbits) in the September following their third birthday (rising 4s). Applications for Nursery places can be made at any time from birth onwards.

As the first entry point to King’s House, we expect those joining our Nursery to move onto the School. More information is available in our Admissions Policy.

Entry to Reception

Reception places are offered a year and a half before entry to children in our Nursery, siblings and then in order of date of registration. We are a mixed-ability school and do not formally assess pupils before offering them a place in Reception.

Other Intakes

We also have small intakes of children commonly joining us at 7+, 8+ and 11+ into Years 3, 4 and 7 (usually up to approximately 6 places), and often a small number of places available in other year groups too. Pupils wishing to enter at the senior stages are assessed in English and Maths in either November or January, and then interviewed prior to entry.

Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us to find out more about our upcoming availability!

What is the admissions process for 11+ applicants in September 2026?

Both boys and girls will be able to join King’s House in September 2026. The 11+ admissions process will involve the following:

  1. Parents and their children visit King’s House for a tour of the school.
  2. Parents can then register their children online here: https://kingshouseschool.org/admissions/register/
  3. An assessment and activity morning will take place; this will involve an informal interview, a short INCAS test, team building and subject-based activities, and provide an opportunity for the pupils to get to know each other.
  4. We would then ask prep schools for reports and any relevant existing testing data, before making 11+ offers.
  5. An additional assessment date will also be available for later applicants.

Please contact Sally Bass on or 020 8940 1878 for more information.
