Sustainability

King’s House School is committed to building a greener future through thoughtful initiatives that inspire our pupils to lead with environmental responsibility.

School Eco-Warriors

At King’s House, our Eco-Warriors play a vital role in helping to make our school a more sustainable and environmentally friendly community. The team is made up of our Year 8 Eco-Leaders and representatives from every Senior Department form class, working alongside staff to plan and deliver meaningful environmental initiatives.

Our Eco-Warriors have chosen water, global citizenship and marine to be the main points of focus this year. Last year, the Eco-Warriors focused on three key areas: litter, biodiversity, and energy. Through careful planning and action, they strengthened our sustainable practices and helped King’s House achieve our Eco-Schools Award (please read below for further details). The enthusiasm our Eco-Warriors demonstrate inspires the whole school community to live and learn more sustainably.

The Nest – Our Outdoor Learning Space

We are fortunate to have The Nest, our dedicated outdoor learning space at King’s House Sports Ground. This woodland area features log seating, a mud kitchen, rope swing, campfire circle, and more—creating the perfect setting for exploration, creativity, and discovery.

From our Nursery classes (Squirrel and Rabbit classes) through to Year 1, pupils take part in regular Forest School sessions, engaging in hands-on activities such as den building, bug hunting, potion making, and campfire cooking. Children also learn about biodiversity, how to nurture and take care of our environment and build on their connections with nature.

At the heart of Forest School is child-led learning, where children are encouraged to follow their curiosity, take supported risks, and build confidence through exploration and problem solving.

The Nest has transformed a previously unused area into a thriving woodland space, with over 400 trees planted thanks to the Woodland Trust. Members of our staff have and continue to complete their Forest School Leader Accreditation, allowing us to deliver high-quality outdoor learning led by our own specialist trained teachers.

Charity Support

King’s House School, alongside our wonderful Parent Association, Friends of King’s House (FoKH) community have supported a range of different charities over the years, with 2 chosen charities which we focus on every year.

King’s House has proudly supported the charity Rwanda Action since 2008. The charity was set up to support education and training, provide enterprise and farming opportunities and support the care and inclusion of children with disabilities in their home, school, community and workplace. Their work is focused on the western province of Rwanda on the border of the DRC, and works closely with local communities and authorities. Our Head of Nursery is now a trustee in Rwanda Action. In October, she travelled to Rwanda, where she visited one of the charities tree nurseries. Tree nurseries provide an invaluable impact to the environment, preventing erosion and enriching the soil as well as providing fruit, timber and fodder. Rwanda Action have supported 140 tree nurseries and given over 3 million tree seedlings to more than 24,000 beneficiaries.

For many years, small teams of staff have visited to see these projects, get involved and support them. Some other projects have included working with teacher training programmes, painting walls, and enjoying sports and games with many children. King’s House families have raised funds over the years to build classrooms, connect electricity and provide a hard surfaced playground at our namesake school, King’s House Cyato.

Our Friend’s of King’s House community run events with the support of the school for the children to raise money for our chosen charities. Supporting these charity groups benefits the children through extending our values of compassion and sustainability beyond the classroom.

King’s House School is committed to promoting the use of sustainable transport. Families are encouraged to use eco-friendly transport options such as walking, cycling or public transport to travel to and from school. Being based in Richmond, we are lucky to have great public transport options such as the local train station being a short walk away from the school and shared bus routes which connect us to the surrounding areas.
