Modern Slavery Talk For Newspaper, an account by Francisco and Pasha (Y7):
On Wednesday of this week, Simon John virtually gave us a very interesting live talk about modern slavery. The talk was very informative and gave us a detailed understanding about the horrors of modern slavery. First of all, he gave the box standard definition of slavery: a situation where one person has taken away another person’s freedom over their body and over their work so they can be exploited. He then talked to us about how common it is and explained to us how slavery can be right around the corner. Simon gave us the example of when you go to a hand car wash and the fee is £1, the person cleaning your car is very likely to be enslaved. Furthermore, he gave a good insight into child slavery in Western Africa and how if a slave does not do his daily chores, their family is then threatened as the people who bought the slaves knew their family.
